What You Should Know Before Becoming A Digital Nomad

By September 11, 2019 No Comments

Just decided to become a digital nomad? Well let me tell you, it’s not for everyone and requires a lot of patience. A lot of people or the media might have you believe that becoming a digital nomad is easy and that you can just pack your bags to Thailand while earning a living through your computer.

The truth of the matter of the fact is, you need to have certain skills and bring value to other people before you start calling yourself a digital nomad.

Moving to Thailand or a different country for that matter because you want to earn a living online without any preparation and planning is simply stupid. Let me explain why:

Cultivating Skills

Without any knowledge of how digital marketing works, you can’t really become a digital nomad. In order to sell your services or products online you need at least first know how to market yourself.

Without any particular set of skills or a product that other people are not willing to pay you for, it is not possible to become a digital nomad and travel while you work.

A few skills that are easier to learn but are rewarding are:

  • Building websites
  • Doing SEO
  • PPC marketing
  • Copywriting

These skills are actually in demand and a lot of companies and businesses don’t even know the basics of digital marketing. So if you can explain to businesses your value and how you can help them make more money, then you are more likely to get paid for your knowledge and expertise. Best of it all, you get to work from different locations assuming that you are pretty upfront about the work location with your contractor (some want you to work from their office).

However, if you are not providing a service for other people and actually selling stuff online. Your product has to be something other people are willing to buy. And even IF you are selling a great product, you need to get eyeballs and attention for your products.

Which is why you need to be able to do SEO, PPC, and other forms of marketing for your online business. It takes a few years and you might actually have to spend some money on courses, programs, etc if you want to be successful.

Learn To Be Disciplined

Discipline and practice are key. People make it out to be easy and something that you can do within a few months. If you have the foundation and learn really quickly with an accelerated program, it is possible, however you can’t just quit your job and decide to become a digital nomad without setting up the right foundation nor without having any plans.

You need to save up some money and invest in yourself first before you take the plunge. Learn about digital marketing. Build your website. Make a business model/proposal. Network with people who have done it, before you actually make a hasty decision.
